Cloud Choice: AWS vs. Azure vs. GCP for a Small Business
For most small businesses, the honest answer is: all three are excellent, and the “best” one is the one your team can actually run. The cloud you choose matters far less than choosing deliberately and not spreading across all three by accident. Here’s how to decide without over-thinking it.
The plain-English differences
AWS (Amazon) is the broadest and most mature. The most services, the most tutorials, the largest hiring pool. That breadth is power and, occasionally, overwhelm.
Azure (Microsoft) is the natural fit if you already live in Microsoft — Microsoft 365, Windows, Active Directory, Teams. The integration and single-sign-on story is hard to beat for a Microsoft shop.
GCP (Google) is often the friendliest for data and analytics, and its pricing can be simpler. Smaller ecosystem, but strong where it’s strong.
What actually drives the bill
The logo on the invoice matters less than these four things, which are true on all three:
- Compute left running. Servers you forgot to turn off are the #1 source of surprise bills.
- Data egress. Moving data out of the cloud (or between regions) costs money; storing it is cheap.
- Managed vs. do-it-yourself. Managed databases and services cost more per month but far less in your team’s time.
- Nobody watching. Without one person owning cost, spend only ever goes up. A weekly glance at the billing dashboard pays for itself.
Which fits us? A 5-question decision grid
| If… | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| You already run Microsoft 365 / Windows / Teams | Azure |
| Your team’s existing skills or contractors know one cloud | That one — skills beat features |
| You want the biggest hiring pool and the most “how-to” answers online | AWS |
| Your center of gravity is data, reporting, or analytics | GCP (AWS/Azure are fine too) |
| You have no strong reason for any of the above | Pick one and move on — don’t split across two |
